Camp FAQs
Crestview Camps
A Southwestern Camp with Northeastern Traditions
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Are there specific visiting days and hours?
At Crestview Camps you are always welcome to visit your children, except for the first and last weeks of camp and on excessive heat warning days when visiting is not permitted. Visiting is an important source of communication with your child’s Group Leader and general staff members and is a good way of keeping informed about special camp activities. Visiting hours start 10:00a.m. and end at 1:00p.m.
2. How good is Crestview Camps’ instruction?
Our program for boys and girls is strong and instructionally based. Specialty activities (art, cartooning, dance, drama, magic, martial arts) are age-appropriate and emphasize high-quality skill development. Every area has a specialist who directs the activity and is qualified either by license or experience. Our athletic specialists oversee most sports at Crestview and most sports periods are a mixture of instruction and play.
3. Would you say Crestview Camps is structured or non-structured?
In most ways Crestview is a very “structured” camp. Each group has a set schedule it is expected to follow each day. The campers and staff know what they will be doing each day and this makes locating a particular camper or staff member at any time easy, if necessary. On the other hand, we could be considered less “structured” than some camps, because our select period (Upper and Senior Campers only) gives campers the freedom to choose any activity offered for one period a day for an entire week. Labels can be tricky but we consider ourselves a structured camp with some individual choice. Crestview is not a “hang around” camp. It offers an extremely busy, age-appropriate and dynamic program.
4. Would you say Crestview Camps is competitive or non-competitive?
Although games are played and scores are kept, Crestview’s program promotes a non-competitive sports environment where everyone is a winner. The staff’s emphasis is on participation and learning skills. Every camper is given equal playing time in every game. The goal is to send each camper home, everyday, with a sense of accomplishment. However, for Upper and Senior campers some “select” activities are competitively structured and chosen by those campers who enjoy some competition in their camp day. We also have a three-day Color War for all campers that will be one of the highlights of the summer.
5. How is the camp divided?
Crestview Camps is divided into three campuses – Junior Camp (3-5 years old), Upper Camp (Finished K – Finished 4th), Senior Camp (Finished 5th – Finished 8th). The size of each campus allows us to provide a very personal, close-knit atmosphere and a great deal of individual attention. Campuses are further broken up into smaller groups (Example: The Archers are a group of boys who have finished 2nd grade and are part of the Upper Boys Camp).
6. Is Crestview a uniform camp?
Yes and no. Crestview Camps is not a uniform camp but we do require that every new camper purchase a small amount of mandatory clothing that changes every year (approximately $30). Since many private and public schools in the area require uniforms during the school year we felt it would be a plus to allow campers to wear what they like. However, we make available to our campers some very nice and inexpensive clothing and they seem to enjoy the change. Crestview offers camp-style clothes through a special web-site designed especially for camp! Shirts, shorts, hats, jerseys and more are available and seem to be popular with all ages. Many campers will wear their Crestview Camps clothing during the school year. The campers tell us these clothes are fun and parents like that they are inexpensive and durable. Once registered, all families are provided with the information necessary to purchase the required clothing from our clothing supplier.
